AMSOIL Product Usage for
Harley-Davidson Motorcycles
For 883cc and 1200 Sportster motorcycles, the AMSOIL
Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil (Product code
MCVQT) is recommended for both the engine and the transmission.
On 1340 cc, 1450 cc and 1584cc models, the
20W-50 AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (Product code
MCVQT) is recommended for the engine crankcase, AMSOIL
75W-110 Gear Lube (Product code
SVTQT) for the transmission and AMSOIL 10W-40 (Product code
MCFQT) Synthetic Motorcycle Oil for the chaincase.
These recommendations for the 1340 cc, 1450 cc, and
1584 cc are, in our opinion, superior to using a 20W-50 m/c oil in
the engine, transmission and primary as H-D recommends with their new
Syn3. If you choose to you certainly can use the AMSOIL 20W-50
motorcycle oil in the engine, transmission and primary as a replacement
for the Syn3 (which is a 20W-50 m/c oil), however it is our
recommendation that it is better to use the specific products outlined
above for superior performance.
Gear Lubes have Extreme Pressure (EP) additives for superior protection
of the gear surfaces while motor oils typically do not have EP additives
since EP additives can be detrimental inside an engine. Therefore it is
better to use gear lube in your transmission than motor oil.
The change interval specification on AMSOIL motorcycle oil and
AMSOIL
Super Motorcycle Oil Filters is 2 times manufacturer
recommendations.
If the transmission of your Harley clanks
(which is a problem among many Harley-Davidson Motorcycles) upon
shifting gears when you accelerate, the AMSOIL 75W-110 Severe Gear

smoother, noise free accelerations.

Dear Mr. Scanlon:
Thank you for your recent letter requesting information on
Harley-Davidson's one-year, unlimited mileage warranty when
Synthetic Lubricants are used.
Until now, the Motor Company has never supported the use of
synthetic products in our vehicles because there had never been
any test validations completed on the numerous formulations in
HD/Buell motorcycles to determine the viability of using these
products on Harley-Davidson products until now.
We have developed a specially formulated synthetic fluid
called SYN3. This fluid can be used in Harley-Davidson engines,
transmissions and primary chaincases. This product had been
exclusively designed for Harley-Davidson and is the only
synthetic product tested and certified by Harley-Davidson
engineering for use on HD/Buell motorcycles.
The use of a
different brand of fluid does not void the one-year, unlimited
mileage warranty unless it can be confirmed that the use
of such products was the cause of the failure.
